Bringing an Existing Mezzanine Up to Code: A Quick, Compliant Solution for a Happy Client
At Apex Mezzanines we’re often called upon to resolve compliance issues with existing mezzanines — particularly those that weren’t originally built to current Australian standards. One recent project highlights exactly how we help our clients bring older structures up to code, quickly and with minimal disruption.
The Challenge
A local real estate agent engaged us to rectify a mezzanine structure that had not been built by Apex Mezzanines and did not meet compliance requirements. The goal was clear: ensure the mezzanine met current Australian standards and could pass both engineering certification and Council approval — all while minimising disruption to the tenant’s daily operations.
The Solution
Our first step was to engage a qualified structural engineer, who carried out a detailed assessment of the mezzanine and provided a clear scope of the remedial work required.
Based on their recommendations, we carried out the following upgrades:
Installed AS 1657-compliant handrails and a sliding gate to meet safety standards for fall protection and access.
Reinforced the existing flooring by overlaying 21mm structural plywood on top of the existing 19mm yellow tongue, which was not adequate for the required load rating.
The Outcome
The result is a structurally sound, fully compliant mezzanine that now meets engineering standards and has received full Council approval.
